At its core is the characterization of surface structures using the <strong data-start=\"2971\" data-end=\"3003\">autocorrelation length (Ral)<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"3004\" data-end=\"3007\" \/>This parameter describes the distance over which surface structures statistically repeat and provides a <strong data-start=\"3111\" data-end=\"3181\">quantitative basis for determining the required lateral resolution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3186\" data-end=\"3596\">Building on this, the article demonstrates how profilometers can be classified based on their <strong data-start=\"3280\" data-end=\"3311\">lateral period limit (DLIM)<\/strong>\u2013 that is, the threshold up to which periodic structures can still be reliably resolved.<br data-start=\"3400\" data-end=\"3403\" \/>This methodological approach creates transparency when assessing and selecting different measurement systems and helps users identify the instrument best suited to their specific application.<\/p>\n<p
