Application of white-light coherence scanning interferometry for the measurement of surface roughness and microstructures


White-light-based coherence scanning interferometry enables significantly higher resolution compared to other optical 3D measurement methods, such as confocal microscopy, focus variation, chromatic confocal sensors, fringe projection, or laser triangulation sensors.

Advantages of smartWLI sensors and optical profilers compared to other white-light coherence scanning interferometers

The use of high-speed cameras combined with powerful parallel data processing significantly accelerates both data acquisition and evaluation. This enhances the system’s robustness and reduces its sensitivity to vibrations. The increased processing speed enables efficient acquisition

and merging of several hundred individual scans, each with typical cycle times of 1 to 3 seconds. Additionally, techniques such as contrast optimization, model-based signal correction, and data quality monitoring allow for the reliable detection of weak signals, even in steeply inclined surface areas.
