Project Start: “Development of Methods for Acquiring 3D Surface Measurement Data through Parallel Processing using OpenCL for GPUs”
Since 2008, GBS mbH has been developing and marketing systems for 3D surface measurement. The core technology is based on white light interferometry and focus variation. In recent years, there has been a significant demand to further develop this technology from a laboratory device to a production-ready 3D sensor. The greatest challenge for this 3D technology lies in the required short measurement and evaluation times. One solution approach is the parallel processing of image data—an approach that GBS recognized early on and integrated into its smartWLI products. The parallel processing is carried out using the CUDA interface on NVIDIA graphics cards.
At the end of 2015, GBS started a project to further develop this technology. The aim is to expand the range of 3D methods. The foundation is developments based on the programming language OpenCL, which serves as the basis for programming graphics cards. Clustering of graphics power is also part of the research. The project is funded by the Thüringer Aufbaubank with financial support from the EU.
